How to set up SOCKS5 with Trust.Zone VPN

1 November 2024

SOCKS5 is a secure proxy protocol that routes internet traffic through a server, masking the client’s IP address.

It supports both TCP and UDP traffic, providing flexibility for various applications like web browsing, streaming, and P2P. SOCKS5 does not encrypt traffic by itself but adds authentication features, which helps prevent unauthorized access.

It is lightweight and faster than other VPN protocols, as it doesn't add encryption overhead, making it suitable for low-latency applications where privacy is needed but full encryption isn’t essential.

Here is a guide how to set up Socks5 with TrustZone

How to Set Up Socks5 on Windows

Use the free SSTap-beta application.

Instructions:

  1. Before installing or using SSTap-beta, completely close all running VPN applications such as WireGuard, Trust.Zone VPN, etc.
To fully exit the Trust.Zone VPN client, click "Exit," then "OK"

  2. Download and install SSTap Beta 1.1.0.1, but do not run it (at the final step, uncheck "Launch SSTap-beta"): https://trust.zone/downloads/SSTap-beta-setup-1.1.0.1.exe.
During installation, you may see a prompt asking to install a driver, which you should confirm.

  3. Restart Windows.

  4. Download the connection file that works in Russia: https://trust.zone/downloads/proxylist.json (you must be logged into your Trust.Zone account).

  5. Download the DNS settings file: https://trust.zone/downloads/dns.ini.

  6. Replace the downloaded files proxylist.json and dns.ini into the folder
    C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\SSTap-beta\config\
The copied files must be named proxylist.json and dns.ini without (1), (2), etc.

To open the folder, copy the text below:
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\SSTap-beta\config\
Then, press the Windows logo key and R simultaneously (press Win+R) and paste the copied text into the window that appears, then click OK to go to the required folder.

  7. Launch SSTap-beta from the Start menu.

  8. In the Proxy dropdown list, select the desired connection and click the "Connect" button.

  9. After connecting, the app will minimize to an icon in the system tray, which you can click to reopen the SSTap-beta window.

  10. Open https://trust.zone/check to verify your connection.

  11. To disconnect, click the "Disconnect" button in the SSTap-beta application window.

Do not run the Trust.Zone client simultaneously with SSTap-beta.
