Does Android 17 Make VPNs Obsolete? ECH vs VPN Explained

Android 17 is bringing one of the most important mobile privacy upgrades in years. With support for Encrypted Client Hello, or ECH, compatible Android connections can hide the names of websites and online services from internet providers and other network observers.

That sounds remarkably similar to what a VPN promises. If Android can already conceal the websites you visit, do you still need a VPN?

The short answer is YES. ECH closes an important privacy gap, but it does not hide your IP address, replace your location, protect unsupported traffic or create an encrypted tunnel for everything your device sends. ECH and a VPN solve different parts of the privacy problem - and work best together.

What does ECH change?

HTTPS already encrypts the contents of most modern web connections. Your internet provider generally cannot read the page you open, see the password you enter or inspect the message you send through a properly secured service.

However, some details about the connection may remain visible. Your provider may not know which article or video you open, but it may still be able to identify the website or online service your device connects to. ECH helps close this gap by encrypting the website name during the opening stage of a secure connection. When used with encrypted DNS, it becomes much harder for an internet provider, public Wi-Fi operator or another network observer to identify the website you are requesting.

There is one important limitation: ECH will not immediately work everywhere. It requires support from Android, the application and the website. Some apps and services will adopt it quickly, while others may continue using connections that do not support it.

What ECH does not hide

Your public IP address

Websites and applications still receive your normal public IP address when you connect directly. That address can reveal your approximate location and internet provider and may be used for analytics, fraud detection, advertising or access restrictions.

ECH can hide a website name from some network observers, but it does not replace the IP address assigned by your provider. A VPN routes the connection through another server, so websites see the VPN server’s IP instead of your real one.

Your location

ECH cannot make your connection appear to come from another country. Streaming platforms, websites and applications can still use your public IP to determine your approximate location and apply regional availability rules.

A VPN gives you an IP address associated with the selected VPN location. This allows you to protect your real location and access services through a connection from another region.

P2P and torrent activity

ECH is designed for compatible TLS connections. It does not hide your real IP address from other participants in a torrent swarm. When you download or share files through P2P without a VPN, peers connecting to the same swarm can generally see the IP address used by your torrent client.

A VPN routes P2P traffic through the encrypted tunnel, replacing the visible home IP with the VPN server’s address. This is one of the clearest cases where ECH cannot substitute for a VPN.

Traffic from all your applications

ECH protects only compatible connections. Some browsers and apps will support it, while others may not. It does not automatically create one protected route for everything your phone sends.

A VPN works at the network level. It can route traffic from browsers, messengers, streaming services, games and other applications through an encrypted tunnel.

Neither ECH nor a VPN prevents every form of online tracking. If you sign in to an account, accept tracking cookies or share information with an app, the platform may still recognize you. A VPN protects your connection and replaces your visible IP address, but it cannot erase information you provide directly.

ECH vs VPN: the real difference

ECH improves the privacy of direct web connections. Its main purpose is to make it harder for network observers to identify the website being requested.

A VPN provides broader protection. It routes your traffic through an encrypted tunnel, hides your real IP from websites and P2P users, and can make your connection appear to come from another location.

Your provider can still see that you are connected to a VPN server, along with general information such as the connection time and amount of traffic. However, it does not see separate direct connections to every website and application inside the VPN tunnel.

Do you still need a VPN on Android 17?

Android 17 will make direct browsing more private, and that is good news. But ECH protects only one part of the connection and will not work across every app and website from the first day.

You still need a VPN if you want to hide your real IP from websites and P2P users, change your apparent location, protect different types of application traffic or avoid exposing your normal connection when using public Wi-Fi.

Android 17 and Trust.Zone work together

ECH and a VPN are not competing replacements. They protect different parts of the same connection.

Android 17 can conceal more website information during compatible direct connections. Trust.Zone hides your real IP, routes your traffic through an encrypted tunnel and protects a wider range of applications and protocols.

ECH is an important privacy improvement, but it does not make VPNs obsolete. Used together, Android 17, encrypted DNS and Trust.Zone provide stronger protection than any one of them can offer alone.
